Trails
Center conducted its first Social Skills
Class last April 24 to May 29, 2004. Our
Occupational Therapists, Teachers Aileen
and Andree facilitated the class with
eleven students. The children were divided
into two groups. Classes were held every
Saturday with each session lasting for
two hours. The sessions revolved around
five themes such as a) working alone,
working together, b) social skills in
school, c) social skills at home, d) social
skills with peers and e) developing other
positive social skills.
The
children had a grand time with their peers
while the therapists had a great opportunity
in observing the children's work behaviors
as well as creating learning experiences
to help the children develop their skills
and be aware of their strengths. Varied
activities such as watercolor painting,
creating classroom rule billboards, food
preparation, games, movie clip watching
and role-playing were provided to tap
the different goals set for the students.
Fine motor and self-help tasks were also
incorporated in the program.
Pullout
sessions were also provided for children
exhibiting specific delays or difficulties
in some areas. As a culminating activity,
the children had a simple party. Awards
and certificates were given to the participants
of the program.
