| Social
Skills |
The Social Skills Class is usually conducted
every summer with our Occupational Therapists
as facilitators. The goal of the program
is to help children develop good work behaviors
while engaged in group activities. Students
are taught to observe and follow rules and
assume simple responsibilities. A student
also learns how to be a good leader and
a good follower, doing his share of work,
accepting mistakes and defeat and applying
skills learned from the class, on his own,
in his own environment. Self-care tasks
are also incorporated in the program. When
the children are deemed ready for a group
set-up after having undergone individualized
therapy, sessions are scheduled within the
semester.

| Reading
Intervention |
Reading
intervention sessions are provided for children-at-risk.
These children are at risk for failure to
learn to read. These children may have had
a year of formal instruction but may be
one of the lowest performing students in
the class due to reading difficulties. Early
reading intervention is given to children
who exhibit difficulties in phonemic awareness,
decoding words and in understanding text.
Writing and spelling tasks are also incorporated
in the program.

| Summer
Reading Program |
The
Summer Reading Program is a month-long program
to improve the children's reading skills.
Most of the children attending this small
group go to regular schools. The program
is based on Professor Manhit's Four-Pronged
Approach to the teaching of beginning reading.
Prof. Manhit is the founder of the Department
of Reading, University of the Philippines
(UP), Diliman. The Four-Pronged Approach
is a literature-based approach to teaching
reading and language. A holistic method
of teaching reading, this approach provides
adequate opportunities for developing all
the reading skills as the four components
are implemented. The four prongs are a)
genuine love for reading, b) critical thinking,
c) mastery of the structures of the English
language and d) transfer stage. A licensed
teacher who is finishing her Masters degree
in Reading Education at UP Diliman currently
handles the program.

| Group
Therapy |
Group
therapy sessions are provided for children
who are deemed ready to be included in a
small group set-up after having attended
individualized therapy. Group speech therapy
is recommended for children whose communication
problems involve difficulties in language
use or pragmatics. The children are taught
how to initiate, maintain and terminate
topics appropriately. They are also trained
to use the language skills that they currently
possess to play and interact with peers.

| Outreach
Program |
In
line with Trails' commitment in helping
children with difficulties from all sectors
of our society, the Outreach Program provides
opportunities for indigent families to avail
of the services for free. This is usually
achieved in coordination with other organizations.

| Home
Program |
Home
Programs are provided for parents and caregivers
who, for some reason, may not be able to
attend regular therapy sessions. Home programs
are also provided for parents/caregivers
whose child had undergone therapy sessions
but is a good candidate for discharge from
intervention. These programs may be changed
on a monthly or quarterly basis, depending
on the child's needs.
