Now
on its second year, the Summer Reading
Program proved to be a good alternative
for children who are looking for productive
things to do during the hot summer months.
Teacher Rayds facilitated the program
with Teacher Jing as assistant teacher.
The program covered twelve sessions with
three hours per meeting. There were eight
students who enrolled in the program.
The
reading program is based on Professor
Manhit's Four-Pronged Approach to the
teaching of beginning reading. Prof. Manhit
is the founder of the Department of Reading,
University of the Philippines (UP), Diliman.
The Four-Pronged Approach is a literature-based
approach to teaching reading and language.
A holistic method of teaching reading,
this approach provides adequate opportunities
for developing all the reading skills
as the four components are implemented.
The four prongs are a) genuine love for
reading, b) critical thinking, c) mastery
of the structures of the English language
and d) transfer stage.
The
sessions started with sharing of a story
with good values followed by different
post-reading activities to help the children
understand the text/story better. Language
and writing drills were incorporated in
the program. Varied individual and group
activities were also provided to tap the
mastery of the structures of the English
language as well as the decoding of words.
A library time was provided for the children
to get the book of their choice and the
teachers-in-charge provided assistance
in the decoding and comprehension of the
text.
To cap off the summer program, the children
had a simple get-together, loaded with
food, fun and games. Awards and certificates
were also given to all the participants.
