The
20th World Congress on Reading sponsored
by the International Reading Association
(IRA) took place at Edsa Shangri-La Hotel,
Mandaluyong City last July 26-29, 2004.
The event was supported IRA's national
affiliate, the Reading Association of
the Philippines (RAP). IRA executive director
Dr. Alan Farstrup and the current president,
Dr. MaryEllen Vogt in cooperation with
RAP, led the World Congress. Attended
by over 1,200 participants from over 40
countries, the event culminated after
a two-year preparation.
With
the theme, "Literacy Across Cultures",
sessions, symposia and workshops revolved
around topics on classroom strategies,
early literacy, second language learning,
family literacy, working with struggling
readers, linking reading and writing,
multicultural education, children's literature,
assessment/evaluation and teacher education.
It is a memorable literacy event held
every other year in affiliate member countries.
The last time the Philippines hosted the
World Congress on Reading was in 1980.
Secretary
of Education Dr. Edilberto de Jesus, together
with Undersecretary Fe Hidalgo, came to
the opening ceremonies to officially welcome
the participants. Secretary de Jesus called
the participants as members of the "coalition
of the willing and capable". As promised
by the Local Arrangements Chair, Rizalina
C. Labanda, the 20th World Congress was
"more than just the usual".
It was a great opportunity for the Philippines
to showcase its hospitality, sumptuous
cuisine and rich culture.
